A large warehouse in Corby is the
distribution centre of academic books publisher Oxford University
Press. A major problem arose on a mezzanine floor with high
temperatures following a roof refurbishment which improved the
insulation of the building. Five suspended systems were introduced
to cover the main corridors where most of the activities take
place.
Comments from the
Management
Site Services Manager, Bill
Ferguson:
“The units were installed by our
own maintenance staff and we only had to rely on Work Space
Cooling for commissioning. We look after all our own maintenance”
Operations Manager
“We installed the units just
before the hot summer of 2003. Without this installation the
working area would have been intolerable and work would have
stopped with the obvious effects on the service level we have to
deliver to our customers”

Quotations from
Management
Operations Manager
“Due to business growth we
relocated into a larger factory. It was immediately obvious that
some of the work areas were becoming unacceptably hot. We trialled
an internal unit for a short tim e prior to taking the decision to
invest. This was important as we could then see exactly what the
coolers were capable of and what the workforce thought before
committing to the capital expenditure”
Engineering Manager
“The installation was very
simple. Two systems were installed in a single day. A major
benefit is the simple services – we only had to supply a 10A
single phase supply and mains water. The drainage water is pumped
away.”

United Closures and Packaging,
based in Norwich , is part of Crown Cork Packaging. This is a
large factory with nearly 100 injection moulding machines
producing small caps for the packaging industry.
Comments from Management
Engineering Manager, John Leamon
“We have had a problem with high
temperatures for years. Whilst we have substantial ventilation
through roof mounted units these still did not cope when the
temperatures rose. One of the attractions of the internal unit is
that we can progressively install the systems as capital becomes
available. A complete project to cool the factory was not
affordable – we had to have a solution which could be phased.
A key issue was the approach to
Legionnaires’ disease. Our external water treatment consultant
validated the risk assessment and the prevention and control plan.
The detailed documentation provided by Work Space Cooling was
essential in this process. I could not have even started to
propose the cooling system unless this was in place.”
